InGeNA Submission on the Ban of Genetic Discrimination

The Industry Genomics Network Alliance (InGeNA) has made a submission to the Treasury Laws Amendment (Genetic Discrimination) Bill 2025 consultation, representing the collective voice of Australia’s genomics and precision medicine industry.
We strongly support the Government’s commitment to legislating a ban on the use of genetic test results in life insurance underwriting and welcome bipartisan support for this critical reform. InGeNA also endorses the submission by Monash University, led by Jane Tiller, whose leadership in the legal evaluation process has been invaluable in ensuring the legislation is evidence-based and robust.
Industry works closely with patients and clinicians and sees firsthand how discrimination deters people from genetic testing—decisions made to avoid harm rather than to gain health benefits. This limits the uptake of genomics that could transform prevention, diagnosis, and precision treatment for many Australians.
This reform will empower Australians to manage their health with confidence and fairness. To achieve its intent, the legislation must be comprehensive, clear, and robust, providing certainty for patients, clinicians, and industry alike.
We look forward to the Bill being tabled in Parliament and to continued collaboration to secure a future where all Australians can benefit from the life-changing potential of genomics.
Thank you to our members and collaborators for your input to our submission.
