Genomics Australia Launches: A Transformative Step in Genomic Medicine

Jun 30, 2025

On 1 July 2025, the Australian Government officially launched Genomics Australia, a national agency established to lead the integration of genomics into Australia’s healthcare system. The initiative represents a significant policy and structural shift, designed to support the transition of genomic advances from research into routine clinical practice, with a strong focus on equity, access, and implementation.

Under the leadership of Australian Genomics Health Commissioner Tiffany Boughtwood, Genomics Australia will focus on three strategic domains:

Innovation and Integration

Facilitating the adoption of genomic technologies in clinical settings, including efforts to advance personalised cancer care, scale implementation models, and foster stronger collaborations across the health and industry sectors.

Community Impact and Partnerships

Prioritising inclusive engagement, particularly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, to co-design culturally safe genomic healthcare strategies and address ethical, legal, and social considerations (ELSI). Genomics Australia also aims to establish international partnerships to inform best practice and global alignment.

Governance and Engagement

Coordinating across jurisdictions, stakeholders, and sectors to implement the National Health Genomics Policy Framework and build sustainable models for genomic information management and data infrastructure. A network-based model will enable broad stakeholder engagement, with advisory structures to support diverse and ongoing input.

InGeNA’s Role and Industry Collaboration

As the peak body representing the genomics industry, the Industry Genomics Network Alliance (InGeNA) has been a key contributor to the development of Genomics Australia. InGeNA served as a member of the Expert Advisory Group (EAG) from August 2023, providing independent advice to the Australian Government and all jurisdictions on the agency’s formation, including its role, governance, partnerships, and early priorities.

The launch of Genomics Australia is a major milestone in mainstreaming genomics into clinical care,” said Erin Evans, CEO of InGeNA. “InGeNA is delighted to continue partnering with government and other stakeholders to support implementation, scale innovation, and ensure industry is at the table to help shape the future of precision medicine in Australia.

InGeNA recognises the establishment of Genomics Australia as a transformative step in advancing national coordination, equity of access, and innovation in healthcare. We commend the calibre of the leadership team led by Commissioner Tiffany Boughtwood, and the diverse expertise brought together across policy, clinical practice, research, and industry.

For InGeNA members, this marks a pivotal opportunity to engage in shaping the future of genomics in Australia. We look forward to continuing to work with Genomics Australia and all stakeholders to realise the full potential of genomics for the benefit of patients and the broader healthcare system.
