InGeNA releases Position Statement on Genomics for Prevention and Population Screening

InGeNA has released its new Position Statement on Genomics for Prevention and Population Screening, outlining the organisation’s support for the responsible, coordinated, and system-wide integration of genomics into prevention and population health strategies in Australia.
The statement reinforces the significant opportunity for genomics to identify disease risk earlier, enable preventive interventions, and improve long-term health outcomes at scale. It also highlights the importance of moving genomics beyond pilots and research programs into routine healthcare delivery.
InGeNA supports a system-level approach to prevention genomics, including:
- Integration into routine clinical pathways
- Alignment with existing screening and prevention programs
- National coordination and consistency across jurisdictions
- Sustainable and scalable implementation models
- Consideration of workforce, data, clinical services, and follow-up care requirements
The position statement also recognises the importance of the current evaluation work being led by Genomics Australia to assess evidence, clinical utility, implementation readiness, and national priorities for population screening programs.
As Australia continues to advance genomics and precision medicine, InGeNA believes prevention and population screening represent an important opportunity to support earlier intervention, improve outcomes, and contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.
The statement reflects InGeNA’s commitment to evidence-led policy, national coordination, and accelerating the mainstreaming of genomics into healthcare for the benefit of patients and the health system.
